There are two rings that are most significant when it comes to marking special occasions—namely your engagement ring and your wedding ring. These two rings are a symbol of love for your marriage, but it can be a bit tricky to navigate how to wear them correctly. That's why I thought I would write this guide, as many of my girlfriends have asked me how to wear the two rings correctly. It's quite simple.

Which finger should your engagement ring and wedding ring be worn on?

When you are engaged, you should wear your engagement ring on the fourth finger of your left hand, also known as the ring finger. Some couples choose to simply get a wedding ring at the wedding ceremony, but the most traditional (and probably most American way) is for the man to propose to the woman by getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him. If she says "yes," the engagement ring should go on the left ring finger.

Of course, I've read a bit about why.

The reason the ring should be worn on the left ring finger can be traced back to the Roman Empire, where it was believed that a vein ran from your ring finger all the way to your heart. Although this has been disproven, it is still a tradition that, of course, carries a sweet thought. Women (and modern men) wear their engagement rings on their left ring finger until the wedding day. Once the vows have been said, or the marriage is complete, the wedding ring is placed on the ring finger innermost (closest to the heart), and the engagement ring is placed outermost.

So, if you see a guy or girl wearing a ring on their left finger, and this ring looks like an engagement or wedding ring, he or she is most likely taken and in a relationship. If he or she has rings on their right hand or on one of the other fingers, then I say "go for it," haha!
