All of Abelstedt’s sapphires come from Sri Lanka which is the home and community to sapphires in every color you can imagine. Sapphires are an increasingly popular center stone choice for engagement rings but also for right-hand rings and cocktail rings.
Sapphires are a precious gemstone like diamonds, rubies (which is a red sapphire), and emeralds. When you think of sapphire you will most likely think of a dark blue royal gemstone. But sapphires come in a rainbow of colors, even white. White sapphires are among the most expensive and rarest of all sapphires. And some white sapphires can become more expensive than a white diamond if it is untreated.
Sapphire is made by the mineral called Corundum which makes it a very hard, durable, and stable gemstone for everyday wear. Sapphires have a hardness of nine out of ten on Moh’s scale where a diamond is a 10.
Sapphires are mostly heat-treated to improve both the color and the clarity but also just overall appearance.
Sri Lanka has a well-developed tradition of gemstone mining, especially for sapphires. All our sapphires are mined by hand, using traditional methods. Sri Lanka is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s best sources of sapphires in every color you can imagine. All of Abelstedt’s sapphires are very carefully selected and each stone is its very own.
Not two sapphires are alike. We therefore examine each and every stone very carefully.
All of Abelstedt’s engagement rings and diamond rings are set with small side diamonds. Each diamond is prong-set with a steady hand to make sure that every little diamond is safe and secure on the ring.
At Abelstedt, we have high standards in quality but also for personal and environmental reasons.
If you wish for a center diamond instead of sapphire in your ring we are sure we can meet your request. If you wish for a big center diamond we will only use GIA certified diamonds to make sure that you get the perfect diamond. Each center diamond comes with a GIA certificate.
All of Abelstedt’s diamond and sapphire rings are set in solid gold and white gold. You can choose between 10, 14, and 18 karat gold.
And, all pieces are engraved with the karat you choose. K stands for karat (not to be confused with carat, which is the weight we use to measure gemstones). It refers to the percentage of gold in an alloy. Let’s illustrate: 24K gold is 100% pure, 18K contains 75% gold and 25% alloyed metals, and 14K is 58% gold and 42% alloyed metals.
In doubt about what to choose? Here are a few things to have in mind:
The lower the gold karat, the harder the metal will be since gold is a soft metal. 18 karat gold has a deeper yellow hue than 14 karat gold. And 14K karat white gold has a stronger white color than 18 karat white gold.
Because of the higher percentage of alloyed metals, 10 karat and 14 karat gold offer more resistance to wear and tear than 18 karat. And should you wish for platinum instead of gold, please send us an email to make us fulfill your every request.
